Apps that slow down music, compared for drummers learning by ear

Learning a drum part by ear means hearing a fill at half speed, ten times in a row, without the pitch dropping. Every app on this page does that. They differ on where the song can come from (a file, YouTube, your streaming app), how slow they go, whether the loop speeds up on its own as you get it, and whether they can pull the drums out so you hear only the part you are learning.

What the data says

What we found

Your streaming library is the hard part

Most drummers have the song in Spotify or Apple Music, not as a file. Five of the 12 tools can play from a streaming library at all, mostly from Apple Music on iPhone and iPad (Transcribe+, Music Speed Changer, Amazing Slow Downer, and Audipo on its paid tier); Anytune plays Spotify and Apple Music streams, on Android only. Everything else needs a file you own or, for some, a YouTube link.

Hearing only the drums is now common, and some apps keep your song on the phone

Six of the 12 can separate the drums from the rest of the song. Three of them, Transcribe+, Music Speed Changer and Up Tempo, say the separation runs on the device, so the song never leaves your phone. Anytune, Moises and Soundslice send it to their servers to separate it. Capo separates guitar, bass, vocals and piano, and never names drums.

How slow is slow

Most apps go down to a quarter of the original speed. Anytune states one twentieth, AudioStretch scrubs down to a standstill, and Music Speed Changer goes to 15 percent. YouTube's player also reaches a quarter speed, but Google does not say whether the pitch is kept. Below half speed, sharp drum hits start to smear in any app, so slower is not always clearer.

Method

How we checked

Where the facts come from. Every spec, feature tick and claim comes from the maker's own page, a store listing, a manual or a retailer's spec sheet, read on 2026-10-07, and the exact words relied on are kept with each row (open "Sources" on any card). Store ratings and review counts are the stores' own on that date, pulled through Sonar, an app-store analytics service. A feature is marked yes only when one of those sources says it; when none does, it is shown as unknown rather than as no.

How it was checked. Every row was researched once and then handed to a second, independent pass whose only job was to break it: open the same pages, check every spec, every tick, every rating and every quote. Rows it could not confirm were corrected, marked unknown, or dropped before publishing.

What this page does not measure yet. We have not put a drum recording through every app at half speed and compared how the hits survive. Time-stretching smears sharp attacks, and drums are all sharp attacks, so it matters; when we test it, the method will be here.

No prices. Tiers and prices change often. The table shows the price model; the store shows today's price.

FAQ

Questions drummers ask about apps that slow down music, compared for drummers learning by ear.

Use an app or program that time-stretches: it slows the playback and keeps the pitch where it was. Every tool in this table does it; the Keeps pitch column confirms it per app, and the Slowest column shows how far each one goes.

Loop the bar you are learning, slow it until you can play it cleanly, and raise the speed a little each time it is solid. Apps with a ramping loop do the raising for you. If the drums are buried in the mix, an app that separates them helps you hear what the drummer is actually playing.

Mostly no: streaming apps protect their audio, and very few practice apps can play from them. The Streaming column shows which can. The usual workaround is a file you own or a YouTube link.

Yes, a little. Slowing a recording stretches the sound between the hits and can blur the sharp attack of a snare or a hi-hat, more as you go slower. Most apps sound fine at three quarters speed; below half, listen for smeared hits.

For a quick listen, often yes: it slows without changing pitch, it is free, and on a computer you can loop the whole video. It cannot loop one bar, ramp the speed, or separate the drums, which is what the dedicated apps add.
