Drum Styles: Learn the World's Percussion, One Groove at a Time

Raul Rodrigues

Pick a style and press play. Each guide takes one tradition apart, drum by drum.

Samba

Brazil · 2/4

Brazil's carnival engine: surdos, caixa, tamborim and agogô locked into one groove.

Drumline

USA · 4/4

The drums that march: snares, tenors, basses and cymbals, one sound from many hands.

Malinké

Guinea · 4/4 and 12/8

Djembes and three dununs with their bells, in four traditional rhythms.

How these guides work

Every guide follows the same path: what the style is, every instrument with its sound, the groove built layer by layer, where it comes from, and how to start playing. A style is a family of traditions, so each guide shows one common version and says so.

We started with samba, then the drumline, and now the Malinké drum ensemble of Guinea. More styles join as each one earns its place.
