# Apps that slow down music, compared for drummers learning by ear

Learning a drum part by ear means hearing a fill at half speed, ten times in a row, without the pitch dropping. Every app on this page does that. They differ on where the song can come from (a file, YouTube, your streaming app), how slow they go, whether the loop speeds up on its own as you get it, and whether they can pull the drums out so you hear only the part you are learning.

Checked on 2026-10-07. 12 tools. No prices on purpose: price models only, because prices change monthly.

## What you need, and what decides the pick

- **By ear, on a phone.** I learn parts by ear, on my phone, from music I already have. What decides it: how slow it goes before the hits smear, loops you can set with a finger, and where the song can come from.
- **Hear only the drums.** I want to hear only the drums, or take them out. What decides it: stem separation, whether it runs on the device or in the cloud, and whether you can solo the drums while slowed.
- **Desk transcribing.** I transcribe properly, at a desk. What decides it: very slow scrubbing, saved loops and markers, video support and a foot pedal.
- **Free and web.** Free, nothing to install, right now. What decides it: a YouTube link or file upload in the browser, and how slow it goes for free.
- **For teachers.** I make slowed sections for my students. What decides it: exporting slowed loops, sharing, and whether students need the paid version.
- **From my streaming app.** The song is in Spotify or Apple Music, not a file. What decides it: whether the app can play from your streaming library at all; most cannot.

## One by one

### Anytune

Anytune Inc.. app, iOS, macOS, Android, freemium. Free tier: The free iOS and Android apps slow, pitch-shift, mark and loop songs (the free iOS app shows ads), while the Step-it-Up loop trainer, ReFrame isolation and export are paid packs or add-ons on iOS and the Mac app is a 30-day trial.

Anytune lets a drummer slow a groove as far as 0.05x on iPhone, iPad and Mac without changing the pitch, mark the sections, and let the Loop Trainer start slow and speed a loop up toward full tempo. Know before choosing that the versions differ: only the Android app slows Spotify and Apple Music streams and splits out your instrument with Demix, while the Apple apps isolate parts by cropping the stereo sound stage with ReFrame.

- Best for: By ear, on a phone, From my streaming app, For teachers
- Not for: Drummers on iPhone or Mac who want an AI drum stem or to slow Spotify, since Demix and streaming playback are Android only.
- Someone does it better: Music Speed Changer splits out a drum part on the device in its free tier on both Android and iPhone, while Anytune's Demix stem split is Android only and sends the song to Anytune's servers.

### Transcribe+

Dynamic App Design LLC. app, iOS, freemium. Free tier: Free to download, but neither the listing nor the maker says which tools stay free; a Premium subscription or a lifetime Unlock Everything purchase unlocks the rest.

Transcribe+ splits a song into drums, bass, vocals and the rest on the iPhone or iPad itself, slows it to 0.25x without changing pitch, and runs Smart Loops that raise the speed with each repeat, so a drummer can solo the kit and then work a fill back up to tempo. Know before choosing that it is an Apple-only app: there is no Android version, and on a Mac it runs only as the iPad app on Apple silicon.

- Best for: By ear, on a phone, Hear only the drums
- Not for: Android, Windows and Linux users, since it is an iPhone and iPad app and on a Mac runs only as the iPad build on Apple silicon.
- Someone does it better: Music Speed Changer offers an on-device drum split on Android as well as iPhone, with the splitter in its free tier.

### Music Speed Changer

Single Minded Productions, LLC. app, Android, iOS, Web, freemium. Free tier: Tempo and pitch, loops, markers, key and BPM detection, the equalizer and effects, the track splitter and saving new files are free with ads; Pro removes ads and adds formant correction and the six-part split with guitar.

Music Speed Changer slows a song as far as 15 percent without changing pitch, loops a section with points that snap to the beat, and splits out the drums on the phone itself in the free version, so a drummer can solo the kit or drop it and play along. ### Amazing Slow Downer

Roni Music. desktop, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, one-time. Free tier: The free Lite apps for iOS and Android play only the first quarter of each file, and the Mac and Windows downloads are trials whose limits a license code removes.

Amazing Slow Downer slows a recording to 20 percent on a Mac or Windows computer (25 percent on phones) without changing pitch, stores named loops, raises the tempo after a set number of loops on iOS and Android, and takes a USB foot pedal on the computer. Know before choosing that each platform is a separate license and Roni Music lists no way to separate the drums from the mix.

- Best for: Desk transcribing, By ear, on a phone
- Not for: Drummers who want to pull the drums out of the mix, which no Amazing Slow Downer version lists.
- Someone does it better: Transcribe+ and Music Speed Changer split the drums into their own stem on the device, which Amazing Slow Downer does not list.

AudioStretch lets a drummer freeze a recording at zero speed and drag across the waveform to hear each hit, loop a section, and on iPhone and iPad slow down a video of a player's hands. Know before choosing that the Android version has no video playback and the iOS apps were last updated on 2024-10-03.

- Best for: By ear, on a phone
- Not for: Android drummers who want to slow a video of a player, since video playback is not in the Android version.
- Someone does it better: Transcribe+ adds an on-device drum stem split and Smart Loops that speed up each repeat, neither of which AudioStretch lists.

### Transcribe!

Seventh String Software. desktop, Windows, macOS, Linux, one-time. Free tier: A 30-day evaluation of the full program, after which you must buy a license key.

Transcribe! runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, slows audio to one twentieth of full speed, shows video in sync, lets you mark sections, measures and beats, takes foot pedals, and has a Speed Up command that gradually raises the tempo while a loop repeats. Know before choosing that it does not separate the drums itself, so you have to make stems in another AI program and load them.

- Best for: Desk transcribing
- Not for: Drummers who practise from a phone or tablet, since there is no mobile version and Seventh String does not intend to make one.
- Someone does it better: Transcribe+ splits a song into drums, bass and vocals on the device and runs on an iPhone, while Transcribe! needs stems made in another program and a computer.

### Moises

Moises Systems, Inc.. app, iOS, Android, Web, macOS, Windows, freemium. Free tier: Vocals, drums and bass separation, chord and BPM detection, the synced click track and pitch shifting, with speed changes limited to 10 bpm up or down.

Moises isolates or removes the drums in one click, loops song sections and slows playback without changing pitch, so you can pick out fills and ghost notes or play over a drumless mix, and the Pro plan adds stem modules for individual drum parts. Know before choosing it that songs are uploaded to the Moises service and the free plan only moves the tempo 10 bpm either way, so real slowdown needs a paid plan.

- Best for: Hear only the drums, By ear, on a phone
- Not for: Drummers who want their songs to stay on their own device, since Moises works from files uploaded to its service.
- Someone does it better: Up Tempo separates drums on the phone itself with no account or upload, while Moises works from files uploaded to its service.

### Up Tempo

Stonekick. app, iOS, Android, freemium. Free tier: Speed and pitch changes, looping with up to 6 markers, trim, fade, two-track mixing and export; stem separation and unlimited markers need the one-time Pro unlock.

Up Tempo slows a song without changing pitch, loops between precise A and B points on a zoomable waveform, and with the Pro unlock splits a track into vocals, drums, bass and other on the phone itself, so you can solo or mute the drums offline. Know before choosing it that stem separation is a one-time Pro purchase and the app only opens files stored on your device, not tracks from streaming services.

- Best for: Hear only the drums, By ear, on a phone
- Not for: Anyone who wants to slow down Spotify, Apple Music or other streaming tracks, since the app cannot open files from streaming services.
- Someone does it better: Transcribe+ has Smart Loops that raise the speed on each pass and keyboard shortcuts that work with foot pedals, neither of which Up Tempo's listings mention.

### Audipo

Lapis Pearl Tech. app, iOS, Android, freemium. Free tier: Speed changes from 0.25x to 4.0x without pitch change, named markers and section repeat, with ads; Pro removes ads and adds playlist playback on Android and Apple Music playback on iPhone and iPad.

Audipo is a plain speed-changing player that slows a song to 0.25x without changing pitch, repeats a section from A to B and lets you drop named markers to jump back to a fill. Know before choosing it that its listings mention no drum isolation or audio export, it shows ads until you buy Pro, and Apple Music playback on iPhone and iPad is a Pro feature.

- Best for: By ear, on a phone, From my streaming app
- Not for: Drummers who want to hear the drums on their own or mute them, since Audipo's listings mention no stem separation.
- Someone does it better: Music Speed Changer separates drums with on-device AI and exports the adjusted audio to a new file, neither of which Audipo's listings mention.

### Capo

SuperMegaUltraGroovy. app, iOS, macOS, freemium. Free tier: The Free Edition includes slowing, looping, chord finding, key detection and beat tracking, but does not save edits to chords, beats, regions or markers, or export audio.

Capo slows a song to 25 percent without changing pitch, snaps loop regions to the detected bars and beats, lets you mark moments, and takes MIDI foot pedal control, which suits working out a groove bar by bar on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Know before choosing it that it is Apple only, much of it is built around chord detection, its isolation is described for guitar, bass and vocals rather than drums, and saving loops and markers or exporting audio needs a subscription.

- Best for: Desk transcribing, By ear, on a phone
- Not for: Windows and Android users, since the maker says it has no plans to build Capo for those platforms.
- Someone does it better: Moises runs on Android, Windows and the web as well as Apple devices and isolates the drums in one click, while Capo is Apple only and names guitar, bass and vocals for isolation.
- App Store: 4.7 (1k) (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/capo-learn-music-by-ear/id887497388)
- Google Play: not on this store

### YouTube playback speed and loop

Google. web, Web, iOS, Android, free with ads. Free tier: Speed control and whole-video looping, plus Clips (public 5 to 60 second looped sections, made while signed in, on videos whose creator has not switched clipping off), with ads before and during videos unless you subscribe to YouTube Premium.

YouTube's own player changes playback speed on a computer, iPhone, iPad or Android phone, down to 0.25x in Google's player documentation, and can loop a whole video, which is the free baseline for learning a part from a drum cam or live clip. Know before choosing it that the help pages describe no A to B loop beyond Clips, which are public 5 to 60 second snippets that creators can switch off.

- Best for: Free and web
- Not for: Anyone learning from their own recordings or needing a tight loop on one bar, since the speed and loop controls apply to YouTube videos and clips run 5 to 60 seconds.
- Someone does it better: Soundslice's free plan loops any passage you drag across on a YouTube video and raises the speed automatically each pass, which YouTube's own player does not document.

### Soundslice

Soundslice. web, Web, freemium. Free tier: Slowdown, drag-to-loop and speed training on slices synced to YouTube videos; uploading your own audio or video, auto-generated stems and saved clips need a paid plan.

Soundslice slows YouTube videos or your own recordings without changing pitch, loops any passage you drag across, and its speed training raises the tempo each pass, for example from 50 to 100 percent, with optional auto-generated drum stems and notation synced to the audio. Know before choosing it that it is a browser tool built around notation, and uploading your own audio or video, drum stems and saved loops all need a paid plan.

- Best for: For teachers, Desk transcribing, Free and web
- Not for: A drummer who just wants to slow down their own MP3s for free, since uploading your own audio or video needs a paid plan.
- Someone does it better: Moises separates drums on its free plan from your own uploaded files, while Soundslice needs a paid plan before you can upload your own audio or generate stems.

## What we found

### Your streaming library is the hard part

Most drummers have the song in Spotify or Apple Music, not as a file. Five of the 12 tools can play from a streaming library at all, mostly from Apple Music on iPhone and iPad (Transcribe+, Music Speed Changer, Amazing Slow Downer, and Audipo on its paid tier); Anytune plays Spotify and Apple Music streams, on Android only. Everything else needs a file you own or, for some, a YouTube link.

### Hearing only the drums is now common, and some apps keep your song on the phone

Six of the 12 can separate the drums from the rest of the song. Three of them, Transcribe+, Music Speed Changer and Up Tempo, say the separation runs on the device, so the song never leaves your phone. Anytune, Moises and Soundslice send it to their servers to separate it. Capo separates guitar, bass, vocals and piano, and never names drums.

### How slow is slow

Most apps go down to a quarter of the original speed. Anytune states one twentieth, AudioStretch scrubs down to a standstill, and Music Speed Changer goes to 15 percent. YouTube's player also reaches a quarter speed, but Google does not say whether the pitch is kept. Below half speed, sharp drum hits start to smear in any app, so slower is not always clearer.

## How we checked

**Where the facts come from.** Every spec, feature tick and claim comes from the maker's own page, a store listing, a manual or a retailer's spec sheet, read on 2026-10-07, and the exact words relied on are kept with each row (open "Sources" on any card). Store ratings and review counts are the stores' own on that date, pulled through Sonar, an app-store analytics service. A feature is marked yes only when one of those sources says it; when none does, it is shown as unknown rather than as no.

**How it was checked.** Every row was researched once and then handed to a second, independent pass whose only job was to break it: open the same pages, check every spec, every tick, every rating and every quote. Rows it could not confirm were corrected, marked unknown, or dropped before publishing.

**What this page does not measure yet.** We have not put a drum recording through every app at half speed and compared how the hits survive. Time-stretching smears sharp attacks, and drums are all sharp attacks, so it matters; when we test it, the method will be here.

**No prices.** Tiers and prices change often. The table shows the price model; the store shows today's price.

## FAQ

### How do I slow down a song without changing the pitch?

Use an app or program that time-stretches: it slows the playback and keeps the pitch where it was. Every tool in this table does it; the Keeps pitch column confirms it per app, and the Slowest column shows how far each one goes.

### What is the best way to slow down a song to learn the drums?

Loop the bar you are learning, slow it until you can play it cleanly, and raise the speed a little each time it is solid. Apps with a ramping loop do the raising for you. If the drums are buried in the mix, an app that separates them helps you hear what the drummer is actually playing.

### Can I slow down Spotify or Apple Music?

Mostly no: streaming apps protect their audio, and very few practice apps can play from them. The Streaming column shows which can. The usual workaround is a file you own or a YouTube link.

### Does slowing down music change how drums sound?

Yes, a little. Slowing a recording stretches the sound between the hits and can blur the sharp attack of a snare or a hi-hat, more as you go slower. Most apps sound fine at three quarters speed; below half, listen for smeared hits.

### Is YouTube's speed control enough?

For a quick listen, often yes: it slows without changing pitch, it is free, and on a computer you can loop the whole video. It cannot loop one bar, ramp the speed, or separate the drums, which is what the dedicated apps add.
