How We Choose What Stands Out

On some city pages you will see a short block headed "which one should you pick" above the full directory. This page says exactly what puts a school in it.

Two things up front, because they are the ones people assume: it is never paid, and it is not a judgment about who is the better drummer. We are not in a position to rank teaching quality from a website, and neither is anyone else who claims to.

What it selects on

Five questions a beginner actually arrives with. Each one is answered by a different school, so three picks tell you three things instead of three versions of the same thing.

Every one of those is a fact with a source we can show you. Nothing else is eligible, which is the whole point.

How the three get chosen

Scarcest question first, and each school answers only one.

The order above is the order we fill: community recommendation, then owner-maintained, then price, then online, then beginners. Scarcest first matters, because otherwise the commonest question would use up the one school that could have answered a rare one, and you would get a block that says the same thing three times.

Within a question, if more than one school qualifies, we take the one verified most recently, and if that ties, alphabetical. That is the whole tie-break. There is no score.

It never pads. A city that can only answer two questions shows two picks. A city that can answer none shows no block at all.

What a label means

You will see something like "the transparent pick, one of the few here that publishes a price ($60/hour)".

The short label is compression, never a verdict on its own. The fact that earned it is always in the same sentence, so you can disagree with our shorthand and still see exactly what happened. We will not print "the best option for beginners" and leave you to trust it.

What we still cannot tell you

Some things matter more than anything in that list, and we do not hold them:

Whether they offer a trial or single lesson. Worth asking every school you contact. We cannot answer it for you.
Whether they reply. The commonest complaint about finding a music teacher is that nobody responds. We do not measure that.
Whether they are any good with someone like you. No dataset answers this. One trial lesson does.

Ask all three directly. They are better questions than anything on this page.

Why the block does not appear on every city page

Two thresholds, both in code rather than in policy.

The city needs at least five verified listings, and at least three of them must publish two or more differentiating facts about their own teaching (who they teach, online lessons, styles, or a rate). Below that, picking three out of four near-identical listings implies a selection we did not really make.

Same reasoning as the Price Index threshold: a shortlist drawn from too small a pool is decoration, not information.

Before we feature anyone, we read what people say

Ahead of putting a school in this block we read what is publicly written about it, review platforms included.

Credible, repeated complaints may hold a school out of the featured block while we look into it. They never remove it from the directory: a listing comes out only through our own curation and correction process, never because of something we read on a review site.

We do not republish any of it. No scores, no counts, no quotes, no "we found concerns about this one". Absence is not an accusation, and you will not find one here. We are also not going to list which sites we read, because that turns into a game about which sites to work rather than anything that helps you.

What can never affect it

Money. No teacher, school or franchise can pay to be featured or ranked higher. There is no advertising product on these pages. This is committed to permanently in the Teacher Bill of Rights.
Whether they use our app. We make Drum Coach. A teacher who has never heard of it is exactly as eligible as one who recommends it to every student. We do not track this and we would not use it if we did.
Star ratings and review scores. We do not host them, and we do not read them into this either. A shortlist derived from someone else's review scores would just be us re-publishing their ranking with our name on it.
How good a drummer they are. We are not qualified to rank that from a website.

What it is not

It is not a recommendation that you choose them. It means one school answered one question better than the others could. It cannot tell you whether you will click with them in a room, which is the thing that actually decides whether lessons work.

It is not a ranking. The three are not ordered best to worst, and a school that does not appear is not worse. Most often it just answers a question another school already answered, or publishes less on its own site.

It is not permanent. Attributes are re-checked when a listing is re-verified, so the block changes as teachers update their own pages.

If you are a teacher

If your listing is missing something, the fastest fix is to claim it and tell us. Claiming is free and always will be.

Two of the five are not answerable yet

The model above is live, but two of its questions have no data behind them today, so no school can currently be picked for either:

Community recommendation needs the mining pass that collects those public discussions. Until it runs, nothing meets the bar of 3 independent threads.
Owner-maintained needs a school to have claimed its listing. None has yet, which is not surprising for a directory this new.

Both slots stay empty rather than being loosened to fill space, so today's picks come from price, online and beginners. When either becomes answerable it will start appearing on its own, and the changelog will say when.

One more question is planned and deliberately not live: style ("the jazz pick"). Our style data is free text taken off each site, so "rock" and "rock/pop" currently read as two different things. Until that vocabulary is normalized, a style pick would sometimes name two schools for the same style, so it waits.

The shipped block never used the last two, and our data has no field for either, so they could not have been applied. Rewritten to describe the four published attributes and the two-of-four rule that actually run. Nothing about the block changed; the description was wrong and is now accurate. Better criteria are in progress, see above.
2026-07-31	Criteria replaced with the approved model. Selection is now one school per question (community recommendation, owner-maintained, price, online, beginners), scarcest question first, tie-broken by most recently verified then alphabetical. Community recommendation requires 3 independent public discussions under 24 months old. Screening described at doctrine level. The page and the code shipped in the same change, so this description is what actually runs.
