# The best drum practice pad, by what you need it for

A practice pad is the cheapest drum you will ever own, and the one you will play most. The right one depends on where it lives: on your lap in an apartment, on a snare stand in a practice room, in a backpack, or laid out as a kit. This page puts the pads drummers actually buy in one table, with the specs that decide each of those picks, from the makers' own pages and the retailers' spec sheets, on the day we checked.

Checked on 2026-10-07. 23 tools. No prices on purpose: price models only, because prices change monthly.

## What you need, and what decides the pick

- **Quietest.** Someone sleeps on the other side of the wall. What decides it: a soft or mesh surface, a maker that markets it as quiet, and a base that does not transmit the stroke into the table or stand.
- **First pad.** I am starting and I want one pad that does everything. What decides it: a surface with honest rebound, 10 to 12 inches so a miss is still a hit, and a stand thread so it grows with you.
- **Fits a stand.** I want it at drum height, on a stand I already own. What decides it: a threaded insert for a pad or cymbal stand (8 mm on most, M6 on some), or a diameter and base that sit in a snare basket.
- **Practice kit.** I want to play grooves and fills, not just hands. What decides it: multiple pads or zones, a kick pad that takes a real pedal, and mounts that hold a layout.
- **Travel.** I practice on trains, in hotels, backstage. What decides it: weight, a strap or knee design, and a surface that does not need a stand or a table.
- **Chops and endurance.** I want to build speed and stamina, and I do not mind working for it. What decides it: a low-rebound or two-surface pad so the hands do the work, and a surface that survives thousands of strokes.
- **Marching feel.** I play a marching snare and I want the pad to feel like it. What decides it: a hard laminate surface, a rim to practice rimshots, and the articulation a high-tension head gives.

## One by one

### Vic Firth Double-Sided Practice Pads, 12" (PAD12D)

Vic Firth. pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: A single two-surface pad on a wooden base; the maker's page names no other box contents, no stand and no accessories.

It gives a drummer two feels on one 12 inch wooden disc: a softer gray side the maker likens to a drumhead for wrist work at lower volume, and a harder black side with quick rebound for rudiments and marching articulation, and the 12 inch size drops into most snare stand baskets. The one thing to know before choosing it: no source states a threaded mount or a weight, so plan on a snare stand or your lap, not a cymbal stand arm.

- Best for: First pad, Fits a stand, Marching feel, Chops and endurance
- Not for: Not for the drummer who needs near-silent practice or a pad that screws onto a cymbal or pad stand: the hard side adds volume by the maker's own description and no threaded mount is stated anywhere.
- Someone does it better: The Meinl Marshmallow 12 in mounts on a cymbal stand through an 8 mm threaded insert and Meinl markets its foam surface for ultra-low volume, where Vic Firth states no thread and says its hard side gives slightly more volume.

### Evans RealFeel 2-sided Speed & Workout Pad, 12 in (RF12D)

Evans (D'Addario). pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: The 12 in two-sided pad only; no stand is included and Evans lists the 12 in RealFeel as not mountable.

One 12 in pad gives you a gum rubber side with realistic stick rebound for rudiments and a harder recycled rubber side with less rebound for building strength and endurance. It has no stand thread, so it lives on a table, your lap or a snare stand basket, and Thomann buyers describe it as heavy and bulky for travel.

- Best for: Chops and endurance, Fits a stand
- Not for: Not for drummers who want to mount a pad on a cymbal stand or carry a light pad every day.
- Someone does it better: The Remo Tunable Practice Pad lets you change the feel by tuning a real coated drumhead, while the RF12D's two rubber surfaces are fixed.

### Evans RealFeel Speed Pad, 12 in (RF12G)

Evans (D'Addario). pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: The 12 in single-sided pad only; no stand is included and it has no stand thread.

A single 12 in gum rubber surface with a snare-like rebound at reduced volume, sized to sit in a standard snare stand basket so you can practice at drum height. It has one playing side and no stand thread, so it goes on a table, your lap or a snare basket, never on a cymbal stand.

- Best for: First pad, Fits a stand
- Not for: Not for drummers who need to mount a pad on a cymbal stand or want a second, harder surface for workouts.
- Someone does it better: The Evans RF12D adds a harder recycled rubber side with less rebound, so one pad gives two feels where the RF12G gives one.

### Evans RealFeel 2-sided Speed & Workout Pad, 6 in (RF6D)

Evans (D'Addario). pad, 6 to 8 in, hardware. Free tier: The 6 in two-sided pad only; no stand is included and it has no stand thread.

A small two-sided pad with gum rubber on one face and harder recycled rubber on the other, for warm-ups and rudiments away from the kit. It has no stand thread; if you want a 6 in RealFeel on a cymbal stand, the single-sided RF6GM is the version with an 8 mm threaded insert.

- Best for: Travel
- Not for: Not for drummers who want the pad mounted on a stand at kit height.
- Someone does it better: The Vic Firth PAD6 and the Evans RF6GM both have an 8 mm thread for a cymbal stand, which the RF6D lacks.

Evans (D'Addario). pad, 6 to 8 in, hardware. Free tier: The 7 in single-sided pad with an 8 mm threaded insert; the ARFSTD stand is sold separately.

Evans' student pad: a 7 in single-sided gum rubber surface with an 8 mm threaded insert, so a beginner can mount it on most cymbal stands and practice at kit height. The rubber is thinner than on other RealFeel pads and the 7 in surface is small; some Thomann buyers say a larger pad is the better first purchase.

- Best for: First pad, Travel
- Not for: Not for players who want a full 12 in snare-sized surface or a second, harder side.
- Someone does it better: The Evans RF12G gives a 12 in surface that sits in a standard snare basket, closer to the size of a real snare.

A 6 in natural rubber pad on a wooden base with an 8 mm mounting thread, made for warm-ups and practice on the go at low volume. It is single-sided, and Vic Firth names only the 12 in size as fitting most snare stands, so plan on a cymbal stand, table or lap.

- Best for: Travel

A marching pad: a thin, hard silicone surface with an integrated rim for rimshot work and an included precut Mylar laminate, built to feel like a high-tension marching snare. Vic Firth sells it for drum line feel, not quiet practice, and lists no stand thread.

- Best for: Marching feel
- Not for: Not for drum set players whose main need is quiet late-night practice.

### Remo Tunable Practice Pad, Grey, Ambassador Coated Drumhead, 10 in (RT-0010-00)

Remo. pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: The 10 in pad with a replaceable Ambassador Coated head; the stand comes only with the RT-0010-ST version.

A real coated drumhead on a tunable pad, so you can set the tension for the bounce of a real drum, with a rubber bottom for tables and a mount for an upright pad stand. Its thread is not the 8 mm cymbal-stand size, so plan on a Remo or matching pad stand.

- Best for: First pad
- Not for: Not for late-night or apartment practice where volume matters: Thomann's AI summary of buyer reviews calls the pad relatively loud, and Remo makes no quiet claim for it.
- Someone does it better: The Evans RF12G has a larger 12 in surface that sits in a snare basket and far more Thomann ratings (976 at 4.8 against 119 at 4.4).

### Remo Silentstroke Practice Pad, Tunable, Black, Silentstroke Drumhead, 8 in (RT-0008-SN)

Remo. pad, 6 to 8 in, hardware. Free tier: The 8 in pad with a Silentstroke mesh head; no stand is included.

An 8 in tunable pad with Remo's 1-ply mesh Silentstroke head, which Remo rates at an 80% reduction in volume, for practice where noise is the main limit. Mesh gives what Remo calls a soft spring-like feel, so it responds differently from gum rubber or a coated head, and it comes in 8 in only.

- Best for: Quietest
- Not for: Not for drummers who want the firmer feel of a coated head or gum rubber, or a size other than 8 in.
- Someone does it better: Remo's own coated-head Tunable Practice Pad comes in 6, 8 and 10 in and gives what Remo calls the bounce and feel of a real drum.

Meinl. pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: One 12 in Marshmallow pad on a composite base that is padded underneath and has an 8 mm threaded insert.

A 12 in pad with a thick foam surface that Meinl sells for ultra-low volume practice with medium rebound, and it mounts on a cymbal stand through an 8 mm threaded insert or sits in a snare stand. Know that the playing surface is foam, not silicone or gum rubber, and it has only one playing side because the underside is a padded base.

- Best for: Quietest, Fits a stand
- Not for: Drummers who want two different surfaces in one pad or a hard, loud surface that shows every uneven stroke.
- Someone does it better: The Zildjian Reflexx gives you two surfaces in one pad, a medium rebound Flexx side and a high resistance Workk side, where the Marshmallow has one.

Zildjian, designed with Reflexx. pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: One two-sided 10 in pad with a Flexx surface on one side and a Workk surface on the other.

A two-sided 10 in conditioning pad: the thicker Flexx side gives medium resistance and rebound for everyday work, and the Workk side adds high resistance and less rebound to build strength and endurance at low volume. Know that Zildjian now sells it as the Reflexx Workout Pad while retailers still call it the Conditioning Pad, and Thomann lists it with no stand mount.

- Best for: Chops and endurance, Quietest
- Not for: Drummers who want a bright, bouncy pad that screws onto a cymbal stand.
- Someone does it better: The Meinl Marshmallow 12 in has an 8 mm threaded insert for a cymbal stand and Meinl says it fits any snare stand, while Thomann lists the Reflexx with no stand mount.

A 10 in snare training pad with a tunable two-ply mesh head, a raised rubber comfort hoop for rim shots and side stick, and more than 100 steel balls inside that give a snare buzz that follows your dynamics. Know that it is the snare pad of Tama's True Touch Training Kit, built heavy on a steel backing plate, and it is designed to give sound feedback rather than near silence.

- Best for: Practice kit
- Not for: Drummers who need near-silent practice or a light pad to carry, since it makes a snare buzz on purpose and sits on a steel plate.
- Someone does it better: The Sabian Quiet Tone Mesh 10 in also has a tunable mesh head and a triple-flanged metal hoop for rim shots, in a lighter weight pad that Long & McQuade says cuts volume by up to 99%.

### Sabian 10 in Quiet Tone Mesh (QTM10)

Sabian. pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: One 10 in pad with a mesh head, a triple-flanged metal hoop and non-slip rubber feet.

A 10 in pad with a tunable mesh head and a triple-flanged metal hoop, so you get rim shots, cross-sticking and a drum-like feel at far lower volume than a drum. - Best for: Quietest, Fits a stand
- Not for: Drummers who want to screw a pad onto a cymbal stand or who want the dead, soft feel of a thick foam pad.

### Sabian 14 in Quiet Tone Snare Drum Practice Pad, Classic Version (QT-SD14CL)

Sabian. pad, 13 in and up, hardware. Free tier: One 14 in pad with a real drum head, an internal muting system and a 4-leg system underneath.

A full 14 in pad with a real drum head and internal muting that you place on top of your snare drum, where its four legs pass vibration to the snare wires so you still hear a muted snare sound. Know that the current version carries the CL suffix and dates from the second half of 2024, and Sabian's page does not say the head is tunable or that it fits a stand.

- Best for: Quietest
- Not for: Drummers who want a small pad for a desk or a bag, or a stand-mounted pad without a snare drum under it.
- Someone does it better: The Sabian Quiet Tone Mesh 10 in is sold for use on a snare stand and has adjustable tensioning, two things the Classic's page does not claim.

Pat Petrillo Products. pad, 10 to 12 in, kit layout, hardware. Free tier: One four-zone P4 pad plus a QR code for four free online video lessons by Pat Petrillo.

A 12 in multi-level pad with four playing zones, a silicone snare zone, harder and softer rubber tom zones and a harder silicone cymbal zone, so you can practice moving patterns around a kit layout on one pad. Know that Drumeo no longer sells it and its old Drumeo page now returns not found, though retailers still stock the updated version, and Thomann lists no stand mount.

- Best for: Practice kit
- Not for: Drummers who want one large, even surface for long single-surface rudiment work or a pad that screws onto a cymbal stand.
- Someone does it better: The Meinl Marshmallow 12 in has an 8 mm threaded insert and Meinl says it fits any snare stand, while Thomann lists the P4 with no stand mount.

### Drumeo QuietPad

Drumeo (Musora). pad, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: One 12 in two-sided QuietPad in one of five Color Burst colors.

A 12 in two-sided pad with a traditional side and a quiet side that Drumeo says is 50% quieter than standard pads, and it fits a standard snare stand. Know that Drumeo does not name the material of either side and Thomann lists no stand mount, so plan on a snare stand or Drumeo's PadStand, not a cymbal stand thread.

- Best for: Quietest, Fits a stand, Travel
- Not for: Drummers who want to screw a pad onto a cymbal stand or who need to know exactly what rubber or foam they are buying.
- Someone does it better: The Meinl Marshmallow 12 in has an 8 mm threaded insert for a cymbal stand as well as fitting a snare stand, while Thomann lists the QuietPad with no stand mount.

Drumeo (Musora). kick-pad, kit layout, hardware. Free tier: One QuietKick unit, one reverse angle beater, two ultra-quiet strike pads and one long-lasting strike pad.

A low-volume bass drum practice pad that you play with your own bass drum pedal, with three interchangeable strike pads and a reverse angle beater included, so you can train footwork in an apartment or hotel room. Know that double pedal use needs an extra beater, which Drumeo sells as the Double Bass bundle, and Drumeo does not state its size or weight.

- Best for: Practice kit, Travel
- Not for: Hands practice; it only works under a bass drum pedal, and it does nothing for stick technique.
- Someone does it better: Tama's True Touch Solid Kick Bass Pad has quickly adjustable pad height and a wide two-legged stance, and Tama says most double pedal brands work with it.

One 12 inch pad with two rubber playing surfaces, hard on one side and soft on the other, so you can switch between a firmer and a softer response without buying a second pad. - Best for: Chops and endurance
- Not for: Not for a drummer who needs a confirmed 8 mm stand mount, since neither Vater nor the retailers checked list one.

### Prologix VST Red Storm Practice Pad

Prologix Percussion. pad, 6 to 8 in, 10 to 12 in, hardware. Free tier: One pad in the chosen size (6, 8, 10 or 12 inch) with a red dual-density rubber top, a recycled rubber bottom you can also play on, and a rim on the 8, 10 and 12 inch models.

A thicker dual-density surface that Prologix sells as medium-resistance strength training, with the feel of a mid-tension acoustic drum, plus a rim for rim shots and cross-stick on the 8, 10 and 12 inch sizes. The maker pitches it at fluid movement around the drum kit rather than a hard marching feel, and calls the surface mid-volume, not quiet.

- Best for: Chops and endurance, Fits a stand
- Not for: Not for a marching player who wants a hard, articulate snare-like surface, since Prologix builds Red Storm for a mid-tension, medium-resistance feel.
- Someone does it better: The Offworld Invader V3 is the closer match to a marching snare, with a surface made to mimic a Kevlar marching head on a full 13.5 inch pad.

### Invader V3

OffWorld Percussion. pad, 13 in and up, hardware. Free tier: One Invader V3 pad with the 360 degree rim, a DarkMatter or LightMatter playing surface chosen at order, and a non-slip recycled rubber bottom; gum rubber, VML laminate and Hybrid versions are separate models.

A full-size rudimental pad whose DarkMatter surface and 360 degree rim are built to feel like a Kevlar marching snare head, so shots, pings and cross-sticks carry over to the drum, and it sits on a 14 inch snare or a snare stand. It weighs about 5 pounds, OffWorld sells it on articulation rather than quiet, and the DarkMatter surface needs a protectant reapplied now and then to avoid cracking.

- Best for: Marching feel, Fits a stand
- Not for: Not for quiet apartment practice or carrying in a backpack, since it weighs about 5 pounds and is sold on articulation, not low volume.
- Someone does it better: The Prologix Green Logix comes in 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch sizes, with an 8 mm stand insert on the 6 inch, so it fits more spaces than the single full-size Invader.

### AHEAD Stick-On Practice Pad

AHEAD. pad, 6 to 8 in, hardware. Free tier: One 6.25 inch black gum rubber pad with a red rubber rim and a washable tacky gel back.

A 6.25 inch gum rubber pad with a red rubber rim and a tacky gel back that sticks to any clean flat surface, so you can warm up on a desk, counter or coffee table with no stand. AHEAD does not sell a pad called Compact Stick-On today: the current model is the Stick-On Practice Pad, and its pocket-size sibling, the 1.75 inch Wicked Chops, is a different tool that mounts on an 8 mm cymbal stand.

- Best for: Travel
- Not for: Not for a main home practice pad, since it is a small warm-up surface with no stand mount that needs a clean flat surface to stick to.
- Someone does it better: The 6 inch Prologix Green Logix has a threaded insert for any 8 mm stand and a second playable surface underneath, which the gel-backed Stick-On lacks.

### Aquarian Super-Pad Low Volume Drumsurface 14 in

Aquarian Drumheads. pad, 13 in and up, hardware. Free tier: One 14 inch Super-Pad with a non-skid base, made to lay on a snare or tom or on any flat surface.

Lay it on a real 14 inch snare and it mutes the drum to a low volume while still driving the snare wires, so buzz, drag and ghost-stroke work still sounds like a snare; on its non-skid base it also works as a silent stand-alone pad on a table or snare stand. Aquarian no longer lists the Super-Pad on its own website or shop, but retailers still sell it new: Long & McQuade takes orders for the 14 inch, and Steve Weiss Music and Drum Center of New Hampshire stock other sizes.

- Best for: Quietest, Fits a stand
- Not for: Not for a drummer who wants a pad on a cymbal stand, since it has no mounting hardware, or one in hand this week, since the 14 inch was out of stock at Long & McQuade, Steve Weiss Music and Drum Center of New Hampshire.
- Someone does it better: The Offworld Invader V3 also sits on a 14 inch snare or snare stand and is in production and in stock, though it is not built for low volume.

## What we found

### "Quiet" is on almost every label

Sixteen of the 23 pads in this table are marketed as quiet, low-volume or silent, from soft foam and mesh to firm gum rubber. The word tells you the maker wants the apartment buyer; it does not tell you how a foam pad compares with a rubber one on the other side of a wall. That comparison is the measurement this page does not have yet, and the method section says so.

### Check the stand before you buy for it

"Fits a stand" means two different things. Some pads have a threaded insert for a cymbal or pad stand, and even those differ: most use 8 mm, Remo uses M6. Others have no thread at all and are meant to sit in a snare stand basket, including the two most-rated 12 inch Evans pads, which Evans describes as not mountable. The Thread and Basket columns show which is which.

### The pads people buy most are the plain ones

The highest rating counts belong to the simplest designs: the single-sided Evans RealFeel 12 inch has 976 ratings on Thomann, the most in its practice pad category, and the two-sided version more than 5,700 on Amazon US. Gum rubber on a round base, 12 inches, is still the default for a reason: it is the first-pad pick in almost every guide and in this table.

### Pads disappear without an announcement

Between the products we set out to check and the ones in this table, one pad is gone from every retailer (the Movement Drum Co 4-in-1), one has vanished from its maker's site while a few shops still list it (the Aquarian Super-Pad), the P4's original site no longer hosts it, three Evans pads were renamed, and the Vater Chop Builder was sold out at every retailer we checked. A dated table is the only honest kind for this category, which is why every row says when it was checked.

## How we checked

**Where the facts come from.** Diameter, surface, base, sides, threads and the quiet and rebound claims come from each maker's product page, a retailer's spec sheet (Thomann, Sweetwater) or the manual, read on 2026-10-07, and the exact words relied on are kept with each row (open "Sources" on any card). Retail ratings are the retailer's own count on that date. A feature is marked yes only when a maker, a retailer sheet or a manual says it; when none does, it is shown as unknown rather than as no.

**How it was checked.** Every row was researched once and then handed to a second, independent pass whose only job was to break it: open the same pages, check every spec, every claim, every rating. Rows it could not confirm were corrected or marked unknown before publishing.

**What this page does not measure yet.** Quiet and rebound are the makers' words, not ours. We have not yet put these pads under a sound level meter, in the same room, with the same stick and the same stroke, or scored their rebound against each other. Until we publish that method and those numbers, the quiet column means "the maker markets it as quiet", nothing more.

**No prices.** Prices change weekly across retailers and regions. The table says what kind of pad it is; the retailer says today's price.

## FAQ

### Is a drum practice pad worth it?

Yes, for almost every drummer. Hands are most of drumming, a pad is the only drum you can play at midnight, and most of the technique work in method books is written for a pad. The one thing it cannot teach is moving around a kit, which is why the kit-layout pads exist.

### Can I learn drums with just a practice pad?

You can learn the hands: grip, strokes, rudiments, timing, reading. You cannot learn feet, coordination between limbs or the sound of a kit. Most drummers who start on a pad add a kick pad or a kit within the first months. The first-pad chip shows the pads that make that start easy.

### Are drum pads good for beginners?

A 10 to 12 inch pad with a surface that rebounds like a drum is the standard first purchase, and the makers in this table sell exactly that. Avoid the hardest and softest surfaces at the start: both hide what your hands are doing.

### What size practice pad should I get?

10 to 12 inches for a first pad or for stand use, because a miss still lands on the surface. 6 to 8 inches for a bag, a desk or a second pad. 13 inches and up when you want it to sit in a snare stand basket and feel like the drum it replaces.

### What size practice pad fits a snare stand?

Many 12 inch pads are meant to sit in a snare stand basket, and the makers that intend it say so; the basket column shows which. Others have a threaded insert instead and go on a cymbal stand or a dedicated pad stand. Check the thread: most are 8 mm, and a few use M6, which needs a matching stand.

### Which practice pad is the quietest?

The mesh and soft-silicone pads are the ones their makers market as quiet, and the quiet column lists them. We have not measured them against each other yet, so this page does not name a quietest pad; when we run that test the numbers will be here with the method.
