# Earplugs for drummers compared: musician plugs, filters and fit

Earplugs for drummers come in four kinds: filtered plugs designed for music, foam, electronic plugs that react as the sound gets louder, and custom molds. The makers' own figures run from an NRR of 5 for Earasers' standard filter to an NRR of 33 for Howard Leight's foam, and some makers publish only a European SNR. The table compares 13 earplugs on what each maker states they block, how they fit, and what they cost in the US today.

Checked on 2026-10-08. 13 tools. Prices are US dollars as listed on the named store on the date given with each row; they change, so check the store before buying.

## What you need, and what decides the pick

- **Behind the kit.** I play a loud acoustic kit. What decides it: the attenuation the maker states (NRR or dB) and a seal that stays put while you play.
- **Hear the band.** I want to hear the band clearly, just quieter. What decides it: a filter the maker describes as flat or high fidelity, so cymbals and vocals stay clear.
- **Discreet.** I don't want them to show. What decides it: a low profile and clear or skin tones.
- **Adjustable.** I want different levels for different rooms. What decides it: interchangeable filters or a switch.
- **Custom fit.** I want plugs molded to my ears. What decides it: an audiologist's impression or a home mold kit, and the filters offered.
- **Low cost.** I want something cheap that works. What decides it: the price per pair and whether they are reusable.

## One by one

### Etymotic ER20XS High Fidelity Earplugs

Etymotic Research. filtered reusable, one size, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of ER20XS triple flange earplugs with a neck cord, a case and instructions; the Universal pack adds large and foam tips.

A low profile, stem-less triple flange plug that does not stick out of the ear. Etymotic says it gives a 20 dB equal sound reduction across the spectrum of hearing, and its manual contrasts this with foam earplugs, which it says muffle sound. The filter is fixed and cannot be swapped for a stronger one, and on 2026-10-08 only the one-size Standard pack was in stock on etymotic.com; the Universal pack with large and foam tips was sold out.

- Best for: Discreet, Hear the band, Low cost
- Not for: Not for drummers who want more reduction than its single fixed filter gives behind a loud acoustic kit, since Etymotic tells users not to take the earplugs apart.
- Someone does it better: Loop Experience 2 ships four ear tip sizes from XS to L in every box, while the in-stock ER20XS Standard pack has one tip size.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - ER20XS Standard fit pack: $24.99 at Etymotic US store (https://etymotic.com/products/er20xs-standard)
  - Note: The ER20XS Universal pack (standard, large and foam tips) lists at $29.99 on etymotic.com but was sold out on 2026-10-08. Sweetwater blocked automated reads and Musician's Friend lists no Etymotic earplugs.

### Etymotic Music Pro MP9-15

Etymotic Research. electronic, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of MP9-15 electronic earplugs with ACCU-Fit eartips, a neck cord, filter tool and filters, a cleaning tool, #10 batteries, a protective case and a user manual.

A battery powered earplug that, per Etymotic, lets quiet and moderate sound through naturally and applies 9 or 15 dB of reduction as sound gets loud, reacting instantly to sudden loud percussive sounds, so a drummer can hear the room and talk between songs without pulling the plugs out. It runs on #10 hearing aid batteries that Etymotic says last about 10 days once the tab is removed, and the newer rechargeable Music Pro Elite was sold out on etymotic.com on 2026-10-08.

- Best for: Adjustable, Hear the band
- Not for: Not for drummers who want a low cost, no maintenance plug, since it needs spare hearing aid batteries and replacement filters.
- Someone does it better: Loop Switch 2 changes between three levels by a dial with no battery to replace.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - Music Pro MP9-15, pair: $419.99 at Etymotic US store (https://etymotic.com/products/music-pro)

### Etymotic ER9, ER15 and ER25 custom Musicians Earplugs

Etymotic Research. custom molded, custom molded, hardware. In the box: Custom silicone molds made from your ear impressions plus one pair of ER filters in 9, 15 or 25 dB (Sensaphonics' version); the audiologist impression appointment is separate.

Custom silicone molds made from your ear impressions hold Etymotic's ER9, ER15 or ER25 filters, and Etymotic designs the ER25 for very loud settings such as percussion, so one pair of molds can take a lighter filter for gigs and the ER25 behind a loud kit. They are not sold off the shelf: you book an audiologist for ear impressions, an earmold lab such as Sensaphonics makes the molds, and Etymotic's filter page gives no US NRR.

- Best for: Custom fit, Adjustable, Behind the kit
- Not for: Not for anyone who needs earplugs this week, since an audiologist appointment and lab time come before the plugs arrive.
- Someone does it better: EARPEACE MUSIC ships three filter strengths in the box with no audiologist visit or wait for a lab.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - Sensaphonics lab price, not Etymotic's: custom silicone ER Series molds made from your ear impressions plus one pair of 9, 15 or 25 dB filters; the audiologist visit for impressions is booked separately and is not part of this order: $210 at Sensaphonics (https://www.sensaphonics.com/products/erseriesplugs)
  - Note: Etymotic does not sell complete custom earplugs or publish a fitted price: the molds come from an earmold lab working from impressions an audiologist takes, and the audiologist's fee is not included and varies by clinic. Sensaphonics, one such lab, lists custom molds with one ER filter pair at $210.00, or molds only at $130.00 for people who already own ER filters. Etymotic's US store sells ER9, ER15 and ER25 filters at $49.99 a pair or $29.99 single.

### Loop Experience 2

Loop Earplugs. filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of Loop Experience 2 earplugs, four pairs of silicone ear tips (XS, S, M, L), a keychain carry case and a user guide.

A reusable plug with four tip sizes that Loop rates at 12 dB NRR (17 dB SNR) and designs for music, so it suits a drummer watching gigs or playing quieter rehearsals who wants the band to stay clear. It has one fixed 12 dB NRR rating; only the Experience 2 Plus version adds an attachable Loop Mute that Loop says gives 3 dB more.

- Best for: Hear the band
- Not for: Not for drummers who want strong reduction right behind a loud acoustic kit, since its single filter is rated 12 dB NRR.
- Someone does it better: EARPEACE MUSIC includes three filter strengths up to 26 dB SNR in the box, while Experience 2 has one fixed 17 dB SNR filter.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - Loop Experience 2, any standard color: $34.95 at Loop US store (https://us.loopearplugs.com/products/experience)
  - Note: Experience 2 Plus, which adds the Loop Mute accessory, is $44.95 on the Loop US store. Sweetwater blocked automated reads and Musician's Friend lists no Loop products.

### Loop Switch 2

Loop Earplugs. filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of Loop Switch 2 earplugs, four pairs of ear tips (XS, S, M, L) and a carry case.

One earplug with a dial for three levels that Loop rates at 14, 17 and 20 dB NRR (20, 23 and 26 dB SNR), so a drummer can turn it lighter for a quiet rehearsal and to the strongest Quiet Mode behind a loud kit without carrying a second pair. The mode changes by hand with a dial in the ear, and Loop pitches only the middle Experience Mode for concerts.

- Best for: Adjustable
- Not for: Not for players who want a flat, musician style filter designed for music at every level, since Loop pitches Quiet Mode for commutes and studying.
- Someone does it better: Etymotic Music Pro changes its reduction automatically as the music gets loud or soft, while Switch 2 needs a manual turn of the dial.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - Loop Switch 2, any standard color: $59.95 at Loop US store (https://us.loopearplugs.com/products/switch)

### Eargasm High Fidelity Earplugs

Eargasm. filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of attenuation filters, standard and small silicone shells, an aluminum carrying case, a gift box and an instruction manual.

A low profile silicone plug that Eargasm rates at 16 dB NRR with an expected 21 dB reduction, and its optional High dB Filters, which Eargasm says reduce up to 27 dB, fit the same shells for a louder kit. The stronger filters are an extra purchase, and Eargasm states no EU SNR for this model.

- Best for: Hear the band, Discreet
- Not for: Not for drummers who want a stronger filter in the box, since the High dB Filters are sold separately.
- Someone does it better: EARPEACE MUSIC includes three filter strengths in the box, while Eargasm sells its stronger filter separately.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - High Fidelity Earplugs, Blue: $47.95 at Eargasm website (https://www.eargasm.com/products/eargasm-high-fidelity-earplugs)
  - High Fidelity Earplugs, Transparent: $49.95 at Eargasm website (https://www.eargasm.com/products/eargasm-high-fidelity-earplugs)
  - Note: Special editions on the same page cost more ($53.95 to $58.95), the MAX Edition with 27 dB reduction is $69.95, and High dB Filters alone are $26.95. Sweetwater blocked automated reads and Musician's Friend lists no Eargasm products.

### EARPEACE MUSIC Earplugs

EARPEACE. filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: Three filter sets (Medium 17 dB, High 20 dB, Max 26 dB SNR), small and standard size earplugs, and an aluminum carrying case.

EARPEACE's original double cone plug comes with three filter strengths in the box, rated 17, 20 and 26 dB SNR, plus small and standard sizes, so a drummer can use the Max filter behind the kit and a lighter one at gigs. EARPEACE states SNR only for MUSIC and publishes no US NRR.

- Best for: Adjustable, Low cost
- Not for: Not for buyers who need a published US NRR, since EARPEACE lists only SNR figures for this model.
- Someone does it better: Etymotic prints a US NRR label for the ER20XS (13 dB), while EARPEACE gives no NRR for MUSIC.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):
  - MUSIC Earplugs: $31.95 at EARPEACE website (https://www.earpeace.com/products/music-earplugs)
  - Note: The sibling MUSIC PRO model (one PRO filter set of 16, 20 or 24 dB SNR, Contour earplugs) is $42.95 on earpeace.com. Musician's Friend has an EarPeace brand page but listed no products; Sweetwater blocked automated reads.

### Alpine MusicSafe Pro

Alpine Hearing Protection. filtered reusable, one size, hardware. In the box: MusicSafe Pro earplugs with two of each filter (16, 19 and 22 dB), a wearing cord, a storage case and a cleaning spray.

One universal-fit set with three swappable filter pairs that Alpine rates at 16, 19 and 22 dB, so a drummer can run the gold filter behind a loud kit and step down to a lighter filter for rehearsals or for listening at gigs. The strongest filter tops out at 22 dB SNR by Alpine's figures, the US NRR appears only as a range label in the manual, not on the product page, and the manual says the white filter does not meet the EU minimum attenuation values. There is only one size, so if the universal tip does not seal in your ear there is no other size to try.

- Best for: Adjustable, Hear the band
- Not for: Not for drummers who want more than the gold filter's 22 dB SNR, or whose ear canals do not suit a single universal size.
- Someone does it better: Earasers sells its filtered silicone plug in four sizes from Extra Small to Large, where MusicSafe Pro comes in one universal size.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):

### Earasers Musicians Earplugs

Earasers (Persona Medical). filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of soft silicone plugs in the size and filter level you choose at checkout; the listing does not itemize anything else in the box.

Soft silicone plugs that Earasers says sit deeper in the ear canal than other earplugs, sold in four sizes with a choice of filter level, and for very loud indoor playing Earasers says many people choose its Euro or Max filter. The standard filter is rated only NRR-5 by Earasers, and you pick one filter level per pair at checkout, so a drummer behind an acoustic kit will likely want the Euro or Max filter, not the default.

- Best for: Hear the band, Discreet
- Not for: Not for drummers who want one pair that switches between levels; each filter strength is chosen at purchase.
- Someone does it better: Alpine MusicSafe Pro puts three filter strengths in one box, so one set covers a quiet rehearsal and a loud gig, where an Earasers pair carries a single filter level.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):

### Flare Audio Isolate, Pro Titanium model

Flare Audio. foam, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of titanium Isolate stems, four pairs of heat-reactive memory foam tips (XS, S, M, L) and a Flare carry pouch.

Flare rates Isolate at SNR 30 dB under EN 352-2 and says the solid metal stems block more low frequency sound than regular earplugs, which is where a kick drum and floor tom sit, so it suits drummers who want a strong, fixed cut from a reusable plug. Flare publishes no US NRR, there is no filter to change for quieter sessions, and the foam tips are consumables Flare says to replace about once a month.

- Best for: Behind the kit
- Not for: Not for drummers who want to switch to a lighter level for rehearsals or listening; there is no filter to swap.
- Someone does it better: Alpine MusicSafe Pro ships three filter strengths in the box for lighter settings, where Isolate has no filter to change.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08):

### Decibullz Custom Molded Earplugs 31dB NRR

Decibullz. custom molded, custom molded, hardware. In the box: Two thermoplastic molds, three sets of triple-flange silicone tips, one set of foam tips and a carrying pouch.

You heat the molds in boiling water and shape them to your own ears at home, and you can remold them if the fit is off; Decibullz states an NRR of 31, a strong cut for loud acoustic drums. This base model has no music filter, and Decibullz sells its High-Fidelity filter versions as separate products for concerts and musicians.

- Best for: Custom fit, Behind the kit
- Not for: Not for drummers who want the band and cymbals to stay clear at a moderate cut; this version has no music filter.
- Someone does it better: Alpine MusicSafe Pro includes three music filters rated from 16 to 22 dB SNR, so a drummer can choose a lighter level for rehearsals, which this Decibullz model cannot.

### HEAROS High Fidelity (Musician's) Ear Plugs

HEAROS. filtered reusable, several sizes, hardware. In the box: One pair of translucent triple-flange plugs in Regular or Small, with a pocket-size keychain storage case.

A low-cost first pair of musician plugs: translucent triple-flange plugs that HEAROS says cut noise by as much as 20 decibels without distorting the range of sound, with a pocket-size keychain case for the stick bag. The NRR is low, 12 in HEAROS' own page title and 15 for the regular size on Musician's Friend, far below the NRR 31 and 33 of the custom-molded and foam plugs on this page.

- Best for: Low cost, Discreet, Hear the band
- Not for: Not for drummers who want the most reduction a plug can give, or a choice of filter levels in one box.
- Someone does it better: Alpine MusicSafe Pro includes three filter strengths up to 22 dB SNR in one box, where each HEAROS pair has one fixed attenuator.

### Howard Leight Maximum (MAX) single-use foam earplugs

Howard Leight (PIP, formerly Honeywell). foam, one size, hardware. In the box: A box of individually poly-bagged pairs of disposable foam plugs, corded or uncorded, with no case.

The foam baseline: the maker rates MAX at NRR 33 and sells it on maximum attenuation, so it is the simplest way to cut a loud acoustic kit hard. There is no music filter, and the maker says single-use plugs should be discarded at the end of every shift, so it is a box of disposables, not one pair to keep in the stick bag.

- Best for: Behind the kit, Low cost
- Not for: Not for drummers who want to hear the band clearly or keep one reusable pair; it is a disposable foam plug with no filter.
- Someone does it better: Alpine MusicSafe Pro is reusable and has three swappable music filters, where MAX is a single-use foam plug with no filter.
- Price (US, checked 2026-10-08): Not published
  - Note: No US dollar price on an allowed source: not sold at Musician's Friend, Sweetwater and the maker's PIP site block automated reads, and the old howardleight.com store is closed. Safety distributors such as Gemplers sell bulk boxes but are not an allowed price source.

## What we found

### NRR and SNR are different numbers

The US Noise Reduction Rating and the European SNR are measured differently, and the same plug often carries both: Loop Experience 2 shows NRR 12 on its US store and SNR 17 on its European one, and Etymotic gives the ER20XS NRR 13 and SNR 17. Compare NRR with NRR and SNR with SNR, never across.

### More attenuation is not always the aim

The music plugs here mostly claim around 12 to 20 dB so the band stays clear, while foam and molded plugs claim 30 or more. Drummers behind a loud acoustic kit and drummers who need to hear a singer often want different plugs, which is why the table can be filtered by both.

### The range in price is wide

Reusable filtered plugs cost less than most headphones, while Etymotic's electronic Music PRO costs more than any model on [our headphones page](/compare/headphones-for-electronic-drums/). Custom molds sit in between, plus the audiologist's visit.

## How we checked

**Where the facts come from.** Every spec, feature tick and claim comes from the maker's own page, a store listing, a manual or a retailer's spec sheet, read on 2026-10-07, and the exact words relied on are kept with each row (open "Sources" on any card). Store ratings and review counts are the stores' own on that date, pulled through Sonar, an app-store analytics service. A feature is marked yes only when one of those sources says it; when none does, it is shown as unknown rather than as no.

**How it was checked.** Every row was researched once and then handed to a second, independent pass whose only job was to break it: open the same pages, check every spec, every tick, every rating and every quote. Rows it could not confirm were corrected, marked unknown, or dropped before publishing.

**What this page does not measure yet.** We have not put a drum recording through every app at half speed and compared how the hits survive. Time-stretching smears sharp attacks, and drums are all sharp attacks, so it matters; when we test it, the method will be here.

**Prices.** Every price is in US dollars, read on 2026-10-07 on the store or page named next to it, with a link: Sweetwater, Musician's Friend or the maker's own store for gear and books, the US App Store's in-app purchase list or the maker's pricing page for apps. When a maker sells for less on its own website than in the app, both are shown. Prices change, so the date is part of the fact: check the store before you buy. Nothing on this page is an affiliate link.

**Hearing.** This page reports each maker's own isolation or attenuation figure, in the maker's words, and makes no health claim. For context, NIOSH set "a recommended exposure limit (REL) of 85 A-weighted decibels (dBA) averaged over an eight-hour workday" ([NIOSH](https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/noise/about/noise.html)), and the WHO says "you can safely listen to a sound level of 80dB for up to 40 hours a week" ([WHO](https://www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/deafness-and-hearing-loss-safe-listening)). For anything about your own hearing, ask an audiologist.

Mostly filtered musician plugs such as the Etymotic ER20XS, Loop Experience 2 or Eargasm, which turn the level down while keeping the music clear; foam or molded plugs when they want the most attenuation; and custom molds with swappable filters for regular players.

### What does NRR mean on earplugs?

NRR is the US Noise Reduction Rating printed on the package. SNR is the European rating, measured a different way, so an NRR and an SNR cannot be compared directly. This page shows each in the maker's own words.

### How do custom musician earplugs work?

An audiologist takes impressions of your ears, a lab makes molds, and you choose a filter: Etymotic's ER9, ER15 and ER25 give 9, 15 or 25 dB of reduction by Etymotic's figures. Decibullz sells plugs you mold yourself at home.

### How loud is too loud?

For context, NIOSH set a recommended exposure limit of 85 dBA averaged over an eight-hour workday, and the WHO says 80 dB is safe for up to 40 hours a week. For anything about your own hearing, ask an audiologist.
